What Is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is Munich’s world-famous celebration of Bavarian culture, beer, food, music and tradition. Held at the Theresienwiese, it attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year. Oktoberfest 2026 runs from 19 September to 4 October.

A Tradition Dating Back to 1810

Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. A horse race was held outside Munich, and the celebration proved so popular that it became an annual tradition. The meadow where it took place was named Theresienwiese in honour of the princess.

Today, Oktoberfest is the world's largest folk festival, combining centuries-old Bavarian traditions with huge beer tents, live music, food and attractions.
